5G will change our lives

5G will change our lives

The 5G mobile internet will elevate a key metric for data transmission: latency. The time for transmission of a given data package ranges from 60 to 98 milliseconds with the current 4G. With 5G this job can be done, depending on specific conditions, in less than 1 millisecond.

The speed gain in data transmission – which can be up to 100 times – is already within reach of the inhabitants of some Brazilian cities. In the schedule set for the expansion of this new network, the National Telecommunications Agency (  Anatel  ) postponed the deadline for the availability of 5G in all capitals of the country from July 31 to September 29, 2022.

The expansion to the whole country programmed for December 2029 also depends on upgrading the telecommunications infrastructure and guaranteeing the availability of electricity enough to feed the new systems.

It is estimated that the new network will increase energy consumption by up to 3.5 times. Moreover, with higher speed and connection stability, new businesses and disruptive technologies will emerge through digital means, which means a higher energy demand, while becoming increasingly natural for companies to have their own data centers.

But what would we be missing or failing to gain from a possible delay in the expansion of 5G?

In a nutshell, the answer is everything and all the advantages and possibilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

Despite the international crisis in the production chain of chips and semiconductors resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, every product – among durable and consumer goods – has embedded technology to communicate with applications and perform tasks more intelligently.

IoT

Automated cars , vehicle fleet tracking, industrial automation, security monitoring, smart homes, etc… Collective gains are projected with the stream of technologies dedicated to smart cities with the use of systems that can offer better coordination of transport modes, intelligent signaling and collection of relevant information for a better administration of cities.

5G, combined with data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT), also promises new ways to personalize clinical diagnostic exams, reducing hospital visits and medical costs.

Currently, thanks to 5G, especially in the US and Europe, the Point-of-care testing – POCT market has been advancing the techniques for glucose and insulin monitoring in diabetic patients significantly improving the quality of their lives to unimaginable levels.

It is this kind of evolution in the quality of life and much more that is at stake. We cannot imagine that higher data transmission speed and better connection quality are luxuries or mere details.

For the collective good and the development of Brazil, 5G technology must reach everyone, within a reasonable time, with quality and accessibility.
